Yoga on a rainy day

I don’t know for sure what the weather will be like later in the day when this post goes out as scheduled. They say the rain will stop and it will be warm (in the 50s). But for now, it is raining.
I am on day 80 of my year-long yoga commitment. I usually practice with a DVD to guide me, or with music on those days I want to go off on my own in a sort of free form practice. As I was rolling out my mat this morning I could hear the sound and rhythm of the rain, and decided I would practice with the rain today.
I stepped on the mat with no real idea of what I would do other than warm up with some Sun Salutations.
I surprised myself with the lack of plans and expectations. I would have expected to go right to all of my favorite asanas (poses). Instead, I found myself exploring poses I don’t really like all that much, such as twists and backbends. I took my time as there was no need to keep up with anyone or anything. The to-do list could wait.
The twists and backbends were not easier, but listening to the rain and following my breath, I did find ease in them. There was a flow to it all rather than a hardening or resistance, as well as sense of timelessness.
I went outside when I finished, enjoying the loose and easy feeling of being present in my body while walking in the misty rain.
Yoga doesn’t take time, it gives time.

And that, folks, is about it from the Bogs for today. Thank you for joining me on this calm and joyous rainy day. If you happened to get a little damp on that walk, there’s a fire going in the fireplace and a place to sit nearby where you can warm up and dry off. Enjoy. 🙂
I like your day. It sounds so soothing, so calm. I love the rain and the sound of it!
I’m impressed how you have a goal (like your outdoor commitment) and stick with it.
Very inspiring, Robin. I’m having such a difficult time doing *any* sort of physical activity lately, but your experience being present in your body has given me encouragement to do *something* today, even if it’s just a small walk. 🙂
Soothing is the right word…even your writing has the cadence of the rain in it today.
It makes perfect sense to me that yoga to the sound of rain would be relaxing–soothing. And the fire in your fireplace sounds equally lovely. I’ll be by a bit later for some tea. Would that be okay?
Kathy
I’m listening to the rain hit the windows. The fire in your fireplace sounds soul warming, too!
what a beautiful, healing, way to begin your day.
This is so lovely as always, Robin.. I’ve just arranged to go to yoga once a week on Saturday mornings (a class) with a friend.. We won’t have the rain but I’m looking forward to some meditation!
Love the pics of the water drops on the tips and the moss. Stay with the yoga!
Your water drop pictures are lovely, as are your words.
day 80!
wow, you’re doing very well so far
Great post! I love the rain. And I really need to look into yoga. I’ve never tried, but I have a bad back and people have suggested it to me to help my back. You are inspiring me!
You inspire me.
Thank you so much everyone. 🙂
HOW CAN ONE NOT BE LIFTED BY THE BEAUTY OF NATURE AS SEEN FROM THE LENS OF
YOUR CAMERA. THE RED BERRYS MIXED WITH THE GREEN LEAFS, THE DARK GREEN OF
THE PINE NEEDLES. AND THE RAIN FALLING REMINDS ME OF SHAKESPERES WORDS

Thank you so much, Dad. 🙂
Love the quote from Shakespeare.
Wonderful sparkles of rain on the needles – gorgeous shots!
Thanks, LadyFi. 🙂
You get the most beautiful color in your photos. Stunning!
Thank you, CFBookChick. 🙂
I play with the white balance and different color settings on my camera. It’s often a surprise to me what comes out.
Why do your rainy days look prettier than our rainy days?
It’s been raining here, too, and when it didn’t rain, it was grey and cloudy. It was SO nice to finally see the sun again yesterday.
I don’t know, Michaela. I think they tend to look kind of dreary unless I go out and look for something pretty. 🙂
An especially beautiful post, Robin! Love the drips from the pine boughs.
Thanks, Carla. 🙂
Beautiful Yoga lady! I think yoga on a rainy–or snowy day–can be most beautiful. I am also a complete advocate of “slow” yoga. The closer to breath, the better. The more present, the better. Your blog makes me feel the peace & beauty of those possibilities.
I love slow yoga too, Kathy. Thank you for your lovely words. 🙂
I’ve missed your spectacular pictures and now catching up on all the blogs. TY for our patience.
Thanks, Elizabeth. 🙂
