End of season

Summer officially ended some weeks ago, but there are aspects of summer that are just now beginning to fade. I think we might still have a few more warm days in store. Even so, we’re entering a whole new phase of autumn.
Queen Anne's Lace bowed over with raindrops
We will have more cloudy, rainy days ahead. The first snowflakes will fly by Halloween. And the few flowers that are still blooming will dry and go to seed.
Lingering Queen Anne's Lace
Autumn and winter will begin to battle it out soon. There’s no rush to break out the cross-country skis or other snow-related equipment, gear, or clothing. We still have time to walk, hike, and maybe even fit in a few more bike rides. Speaking of which, M and I should be out pedaling around Lancaster County, Pennsylvania today. It depends on the weather. We might have done it yesterday. Either way, I hope to come back with some of the images of Lancaster County that I’ve been wanting to capture.
Autumn carpeting
One of the interesting aspects about traveling back east this time of year (anytime of year, really) is watching the season reverse by a few weeks. It is usually warmer and sunnier once we pass through the mountains of Pennsylvania and head south to Lancaster County. If we miss the peak of the fall foliage here, we can go there to see it. I did hear before we left that all the rain they have been having out east has dampened the fall colors.
I’ll let you know if that’s true when I return home. In the meantime, thank you for taking the time to stop by and keep up with me via my scheduled posts. 🙂

I believe I saw that your area of the state has already broken the record for the most rainfall in one year. Wow … and 2+ months to go. Same for Columbus and Dayton. As for us in Cincinnati, the next watery dose will take us over the top … and that should happen before the end of the month.

We have had a great deal of rain this year. It will be interesting to see what happens with the snowfall. I heard an old wives’ tale the other day that a year of heavy rainfall means a mild winter with less snow. I’m not sure I buy it, but you never know…
Amazing that you still have beautiful butterflies. I don’t think I’ve seen any – now – for weeks.

I’d say in southeast PA we’re solidly in fall… but not battling it out with winter. Yet. I’m not quite ready to shiver anyway.

Western PA seems to be peaking right now in terms of color. The southeastern portion seems to be just past that now. At least that’s how it appeared on our drive home.
Gosh, you still have some lingering Queen Anne’s Lace? Ours have been gone for a while.
A few here and there, Teresita. I haven’t been out to the meadows to look today, though, so it’s possible they have finished their season now.
Funny you should mention the battling of the seasons today. I glanced around my yard today (didn’t have the camera with me, should rectify that!) and saw a few things that surprised me. I found one tiny hydrangea bloom still bright with color at the bottom of a bush, the parsley in my herb barrel growing profusely and my butterfly bushes putting out fresh, tender, leaves and looking like it had grown in size since the summer. It is like there is one last “push” going on before the real cold comes on.
It was like that here before we left for our trip, Karma. We are well into autumn now.
