196: As seen on today’s walk

(Daffodil in the woods.)

It’s a beautiful spring-like day here in the Bogs.  We started off with a foggy morning, everything shrouded in misty clouds that seem to have forgotten they live in the sky and not on the ground.

Foggy morning

I spent the morning running errands, but did get outside for a few minutes before I left just to capture a few photos of the fog.  I love to take walks in the fog.  There is something magical about it.  I have decided to head out to a nearby state park the next time we have a foggy morning.  I think it would be fascinating to wander around in the woods and peat bog in the fog.  Perhaps I’ll stumble upon an opening to another world.

Today's view of the pond

The fog finally burned off around noon, and patches of blue sky began to show through the clouds as they broke up and drifted off.

You will have to look at the next photo carefully.  (You can click on it to go to the slightly larger version.)  In the center of the photo is the head of a mama mourning dove.  She is sitting on her nest in one of the spruce trees.  I might have been able to get a better shot from another angle, but I didn’t want to spend too much time there frightening or worrying the little mama.

Mama Dove

The flowers are loving this warmer, brighter weather.  More of the daffodils are starting to open, especially those in the protected areas around the pond.

The land is still pretty boggy, but the levels of the pond and creek have gone down considerably.  More rain and thunderstorms are expected tomorrow.

Mystery flower (is no longer a mystery; it's coltsfoot)

I found a patch of these little yellow flowers behind some of the trees that line one side of the pond.  I’ve never seen them before and have no idea what they are.  Any guesses?  I’ll look them up later if I have the time.  They remind me of asters.  (Edit:  I have solved the mystery.  It is coltsfoot, the flowers of which appear in early spring, usually before dandelions.)

The buds on the maple trees are perking back up.  They were looking a little droopy and wilted after the recent bout of cold and snow.

A feather on the path to the woods

I’m going to be fairly busy for a while.  I’m not sure how long.  I have a temporary job that will be taking up some time.  I will continue going outside every day to honor my commitment,  and posting about it, of course, but I may not be able to visit other blogs as much as I have been.  With the weather finally beginning to warm up, I will also need to start spending time in the garden.  Life for me is about to get very busy indeed.

I need more hours in the day.  🙂

  1. How nice to see all that new life sprouting up! I have yet to see very much growing around here…. soon, I hope! Good luck with your job!! 🙂

Oh, how I understand busy! My poor blogs are SO neglected right now – I knew they would be thanks to Alex’s baseball season, but I still hate letting them gather so much dust. And I really hate that I only have a moment here and there to check my RSS feeds & not comment more. Just know I am always taking a peek! And yes, I spotted momma dove right away. My yard has been full of them.

I’m always taking a peek at your blogs, too, Christina when you’re posting. I don’t always get around to commenting, but do try to keep up.

I knew you’d have no trouble spotting the mama dove. 🙂

Love seeing spring sproinging! The sun is out here today today, with a supposedly lovely weekend on the way. You’ve got me hoping for something to take a picture of popping up somewhere!

We’re going to get to 70 on Sunday!!! But our daffodils are about 3 inches up, yellow tipped from the freezing rain and snow that has drenched us since they tried to emerge. Could use a little sunshine about now..can’t wait till Sunday!

Enjoy your time in the garden!

    • Robin says:

We’re hoping for some sunshine too, Dawn. The flower heads are all droopy. I think some sun would lift them up.

It’s supposed to get up to 80 tomorrow. Woo-hoo!

may your temporary job provide what you require
while still allowing enough time for spaciousness of life

  6. Beautiful daffodils, Robin. The trees in the mist and the reflection of the sky on the pond are majestic, but the red flowers get the award in my opinion; they’re lovely!

  7. Do the daffodils grow wild or did you plant them at one time? Beautiful bright color to brighten up the grey sky.

    • Robin says:

The daffodils were probably planted, Morgan. When we moved here, there were plenty in the woods and along the edge of the pond. We planted quite a few near the house. Last year we planted tulips so I’m really looking forward to seeing how they do.

  8. Wow, Robin, the daffodils are so elegant and the buds on the maple tree are gorgeous! I would never have expected buds to be so beautiful! I love it!

A delightful post. As I scrolled down, I’d let out an “Ooo..” and the an “Ohh…” until I finally laughed at myself. Good thing nobody was looking:-) Good to see the freeze didn’t get the jonquils.

  13. Looks like you had another nice walk 🙂 I love the daffodils and the reflection in the pond.

I love the bright coltsfoot set off by the earthy brown leaves… Très belle! Love the foggy morning, too!

    • Robin says:

      Thanks, Barbara. 🙂

I keep going down to look at the coltsfoot because of how bright and colorful it is in that location. I saw some on our 5k hike on Sunday, too. It’s nice to be able to look at a flower and identify it.

  15. […] them wasn’t back at the nest.  Well, on my walk today I decided to stop by and check on the Mama Dove.  The nest was gone from the tree.  I looked at the ground and found it there, shredded to […]
