266: Dogwood evolution

April 30, 2011

To see a hillside white with dogwood bloom is to know a particular ecstasy of beauty, but to walk the gray Winter woods and find the buds which will resurrect that beauty in another May is to partake of continuity.

~ Hal Borland

Although I don’t have photos of the dogwood tree from the winter months, April was such a gloomy, rainy, chilly month that it at least qualifies as being gray (as in walking “the gray Winter woods” in the quote).  Posting every day has given us all a chance to see things as they unfold.  I thought it would be interesting to see the unfolding in one post.

After all, I don’t see why I am always asking for private, individual, selfish miracles when every year there are miracles like white dogwood.

Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars… and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful.  Everything is simply happy.  Trees are happy for no reason; they are not going to become prime ministers or presidents and they are not going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance.  Look at the flowers — for no reason.  It is simply unbelievable how happy flowers are.

I have gotten to know the dogwood better over the past few months.  Not in the sense that I can spout factoids about the tree, the flowers, and its uses (although I can tell you that the wood is prized for making loom shuttles, tool handles, walking canes, longbows, mountain dulcimers, and other small items that require a strong, hard wood).  I know it better as an inhabitant of our land and woods, one that brightens up its little space by the side of the pond every spring, its delicate white flowers bringing joy and the hope of spring.

See you tomorrow when I return from my at-home retreat.

  1. God, Robin, I adore dogwood! Great photos and quotes!

  2. These are really beautiful. One of the first three is my favorite, just can’t decide which one…

  3. The first photo of the bud is beautiful–even more beautiful than the flower itself. Posting everyday has caused me to look more closely at the flowers as the progress and I am seeing them through different eyes, but photography alone does that, doesn’t it? Have a nice weekend at the bogs.

  4. Robin, nice to see the progression of the blooms, I like to do this too. I like your Dogwood in bloom photo showing the white. Very nice.

I like what you’ve done with this series Robin. The first image in the bud is my favorite – gives the feeling of anticipating something wonderful.

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Kala. 🙂

I like that one too, for the same reason. Just looking at it now brings back the feeling of when I took it, the realization that spring was coming, if not already here, in spite of the weather.

  9. That’s certainly quite the dramatic change, and very cool to see it in one post… Very nicely captured..

      Thank you, Brian. 🙂

This year of being outside every day is giving me an opportunity to see a lot of dramatic change, although it doesn’t seem so dramatic at the time. Putting it all together in one post makes it much more interesting.

Wow! What a great series of captures! I just love the first photo and the third (May 19th) photos. And I love the Osho quote. 🙂

      Thank you, Anna. 🙂

I wish I had the time to put together more of these series as I’ve been taking pictures of the same things for three seasons now.

  11. Amazing shots! The second and third ones are my favorites. Such lovely flowers!

  12. Dana says:

Great idea for a post– you must have a wealth of photos to choose from at this point in your “post a day” journey! Really enjoyed seeing the unfolding of the dogwood blossoms all together in one post.

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Dana. 🙂

I wish I had time to sit down and go through my photos so I could do a few more posts like this. It may have to wait until the winter, when life slows down a bit for me.
