A family holiday

You can kiss your family and friends good-bye and put miles between you, but at the same time you carry them with you in your heart, your mind, your stomach, because you do not just live in a world but a world lives in you.

~ Frederick Buechner

Our grandchildren accept us for ourselves, without rebuke or effort to change us, as no one in our entire lives has ever done, not our parents, siblings, spouses, friends — and hardly ever our own grown children.

~ Ruth Goode

What can you do to promote world peace?  Go home and love your family.

Peeling potatoes

Peeling potatoes

When your mother asks, “Do you want a piece of advice?” it’s a mere formality.  It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no.  You’re going to get it anyway.

This is how you hold onto your family.  You hold them with open hands so they are free to find futures of their own.  It’s just that simple.

Building a snowman without snow

Building a snowman without snow

It is not until much later, as the skin sags and the heart weakens, that children understand; their stories, and all their accomplishments, sit atop the stories of their mothers and fathers, stones upon stones, beneath the waters of their lives.

~ Mitch Albom

Because even a snowman built without snow should melt

Because even a snowman built without snow should melt

Beauty is everywhere, love is endless, and joy bleeds from our everyday existence.  Embrace it.  I love all of you, all my friends, family, and community.  I am ceaselessly grateful from the bottom of my heart for everyone.  The only thing I can ask of you is to stay free of materialism.  Remember that every day contains a universe of potential; exhaust it.  Live and love so immensely that when death comes there is nothing left for him to take.  Wealth is love, music, sports, learning, family and freedom.  Above all, stay gold.

Delightful family images. So what did you use to make the snowman? I about fell off my chair when I saw the “melted” version. Too funny. Also for a second My scrolling stopped at just the right spot and I thought your post read “Mother Teresa… Peeling potatoes” (because that’s something she would’ve done. 🙂 Hope you and M are enjoying this season. Peace.

Thank you so much, Terry. 🙂 Yes, peeling potatoes is something she would’ve done, that’s for sure. The snowman was a kit I picked up at the Franklin Park Conservatory. He’s made of “elastomeric putty” and the plastic flow guarantees a meltdown. He seemed to melt faster after each use.

What a lovely festive family post! So many beautiful photos of your amazing family. 🙂 I really enjoyed this.

Like the above noter, I’m curious about the melting snowman too!

Simple pleasures are surely the best — potato peeling, snowman building, flower picking… so sweet.

oh robin, this is why we live, to see the young and their parents loving each other, this is the word we wish to see more of …. while we know we are privileged in some ways, we also know our modern cultures present a whole new set of problems and challenges … children remind us that life itself knows the way … blessings of the season dear one xxx

Beautiful images. They are all so full of compassion and love. And yes, family. Great quotes you have piled together in the post, too. I think my favourite is then one by Frederick Buechner.

Love this! How nice to see your family. I’m so very curious about your “snowman” and what he is made from.

    • Robin says:

Thank you, Karma. 🙂 The snowman came in a kit I bought at a conservatory gift shop. He’s made of putty (“elastomeric putty” to be precise).

  13. What a lovely post. Just the thing needed. Wonderful quotes. SIgh. Hug that family
