South Harbor sunset. Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. (7 June 2012)

In the last edition of Thursday Travels, M and I had just arrived at the cabin we rented on South Harbor, not far from the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia.  We got there just in time for sunset although we didn’t see the sun itself.  Just a band of light on the horizon.

Fire and rain

A rainy sunset

A rainy sunset

Yesterday’s sunset was incredible.  The beauty was not in the sky as much as it was in the meadows and the trees, golden raindrops shimmering from branches and leaves, and dried grasses and flowers.

Dreaming

Fairy tale woods

Fairy tale woods

life is a garden,
not a road

we enter and exit

Rain and slush

I don't think we'll be seeing this today.

Sun in the clouds.

I’m writing this during the early morning hours.  It’s just starting to lighten up outside.  Before I could see what was going on outdoors, the local weather folks on television informed me that the icy rain part of the weather front moving through had flown east of us and the precipitation had turned to plain old rain.  Fog is rising from the snow cover.  It’s going to be a slushy day.

Wintering

Snow day

A Valley Like This

Sometimes you look at an empty valley like this,
and suddenly the air is filled with snow.
That is the way the whole world happened —
there was nothing, and then…

But maybe some time you will look out and even
the mountains are gone, the world become nothing
again. What can a person do to help
bring back the world?

We have to watch it and then look at each other.
Together we hold it close and carefully
save it, like a bubble that can disappear
if we don’t watch out.

Please think about this as you go on. Breathe on the world.
Hold out your hands to it. When mornings and evenings
roll along, watch how they open and close, how they
invite you to the long party that your life is.

Winter time

Sunrise through a frosted window

Sunrise through a frosted window

It is a pretty day here in the Bogs.  Mostly sunny with occasional snow squalls.  I like watching the squalls move in on big, fluffy clouds of white and gray and blue.

Pause

South Harbor. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. 7 June 2012.

Twilight — a time of pause when nature changes her guard.  All living things would fade and die from too much light or too much dark, if twilight were not.
