Sunday signage, wind, and flurries

As seen on a hike at Quail Hollow

As seen on a hike at Quail Hollow

Maybe it’s just me, but… doesn’t this make you wonder what kind of youth they were hunting?

We had the most amazing sunset yesterday.

We had the most amazing sunset yesterday.

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

~ J. R. R. Tolkien, a riddle from The Hobbit

We had wild winds here in the Bogs last night.  The winds were so noisy that I got very little sleep.  What sleep I did get was peppered with nightmares.  At one point I woke up thinking the nightmares belonged to someone else, and had been carried in by the wind.  It was a bizarre night.

Around 5:00 am I gave up on sleep, deciding to read or watch television or anything rather than lie there listening to the grumbles, mutters, howls, and shrieks of the wind.  I stumbled across this Power Yoga program on television.  I’m so glad I did although I think my abs will be grumbling, muttering, howling, and shrieking tomorrow.  The episode I watched and participated in involved 26 minutes of boat pose done in a variety of ways.  I’m already feeling it.

A cold wind was blowing from the north, and it made the trees rustle like living things.

Today’s walk was brief.  The wind has not abated (28 mph with gusts up to 40+ mph), and the temperature has been dropping like a stone all day.  The clouds have spit out a few snow flurries here and there.  We’re not expected to get much snow here in the secondary snow belt.  Those who live north and east might get a good dusting or more tonight.

In other news…

Marianne has been reading and reviewing the book Clean — Expanded Edition: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body’s Natural Ability to Heal Itself by Alejandro Junger, M.D.  You can read her latest post here.  Dana and her husband have been on an elimination diet.  You can read about their experiences here.  What does that have to do with me or the Bogs?  Well, it has nothing to do with the Bogs.  As for me, I bought the book “Clean” and I’m planning to give at least the elimination diet a try.  The actual Clean plan might be beyond me right now for the simple reason that it involves juicing and making raw soups that need to be blended well.

Let's go back to the sunset from yesterday evening

Let’s go back to the sunset from yesterday evening

I do own a juicer, but find juicing to be a time consuming business.  My cheap, little juicer requires a lot of prepping of the veggies and fruit going into it, and clean up is not a breeze.  I also think juicing is a waste of a lot of good stuff (the fiber, for instance).  I’d much rather throw the whole food in into a blender and puree it.  Unfortunately, my blender doesn’t puree well.

A good stretch

A good stretch

I have decided I would like to purchase a Vitamix.  A Vitamix would come in handy for more than just an elimination diet.  There are all kinds of things you can do with a Vitamix, including make your own nut butters.  There is one slight problem.  Owning a Vitamix would involve a large (for me) sum of money.

Dappled

That’s where Susan comes in.  She’s come up with a brilliant scheme to entice her to exercise while saving money for something that is important to her.  My motives are much more selfish (sorry, kids!), but maybe not.  A healthy me (and a healthy M) might be a great gift for my children and grandchildren.  It could mean the difference between living on our own and moving in with them.  😉

Radiating

Radiating

I’m going to start paying myself for exercise.  $3.00 for a Breathless Body workout.  $3.00 for a Muscle Max workout.  $1.00 for every mile I walk, hike, jog, bike, swim, etc.  At that rate, it might take a while to save up for the Vitamix, but I should be in great shape by the time I get there.

Well, that’s about all from the Bogs for today except for one more item on the agenda.  The winner of a free copy of Full Cup, Thirsty Spirit is Lynn.  Congratulations, Lynn!  I hope you enjoy the book, and that you get as much out of it as I did.  A big thank you to everyone who commented and participated in the giveaway.

Thanks for dropping in.  Have a delightful day, evening, night… wherever and whenever you are on the spectrum of time.

Call that number to find out what youth, maybe they were looking for you. 😀 As for paying yourself, you will be rich pretty soon and in good shape.

  2. Joanne says:

Such a newsy post today Robin! I’ll drop by Marianne and Dana’s later to read what they have been up to too. The sunset is just spectacular! I can well imagine that it would have been even more breathtaking to see in person. 🙂

  3. Glorious sky songs!
That sign is definitely a Jay Leno “headlines” type of deal…send it on over. Hilarious find
Hey, I like the pay yourself idea – such a win win contract!
    (Does the Vitamix clean easily?)

  4. mobius faith says:

A “youth hunt”? Sheesh what’s next?
Funny sign. It reads like a headline from The Onion. 🙂
    Great photos as always.

  5. Corina says:

All the photos today are spectacular! What inspiring nature you have around you.

I used to have a Vitamix but I found it too big and cumbersome for the limited counter space available to me. I only used it once a week or less often and there was absolutely no place to put it. And it is big. Way bigger than a blender or a juicer. Just plain big. I ended up donating it to one of the charter schools where I lived at the time so they could use it for snacks for the kids.

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Corina. 🙂
And thanks for your take on the Vitamix. I’m hoping it will replace other things currently taking up space on my kitchen counter, thereby perhaps making space rather than taking up more.

  6. Coming East says:

Loved your wintry pictures, Robin. Great idea about the VitaMix ( and thanks for the link). I’ve had a VitaMix for well over twenty years. In fact, we just bought a new one and gave our old retro one to my youngest son and his wife. I’m pulling for you to save the money. It’s amazing how, when you really want to save for something, you stop buying things you can really do without. When ever I think I’d like to go to Target just to have a look around, I head to the Y or take a walk so I can put more money into my kids’ Christmas fund.

    • Robin says:

Thank you, Susan. 🙂 Your idea was so brilliant I had to borrow it for putting together my own fund. At the rate I’m going, I might be able to buy the Vitamix for Christmas. lol!

  7. Gracie says:

These sunset photos are spectacular, Robin!

  8. Ellen says:

dreaming somebody else`s dreams, dreaming dreams brought by the winds … it`s to write a short story!! loved the pictures!!

    • Robin says:

Thank you, Ellen. 🙂 I sometimes wish I was a writer who could invent stories. I thought the same thing about waking up and thinking I was dreaming someone else’s dreams. It would make a good story.

  9. Karma says:

Wow that sunset really looks like a forest fire! There have been some real beauties this winter.

  10. OH. MY. GOSH. STUNNING!!! pictures Robin!!! I think the paying yourself for the workout is a brilliant idea. Too bad you don’t pay yourself for the fabulous pictures!

    • Robin says:

Thank you, Colleen. 😀 I think I do pay myself for my photography. Or nature does. I get so much back from it just by being outside and hiking, biking, or whatever it is I’m doing while I’m out there with the camera.

  11. Phil Lanoue says:

That sign seems about right. 😉 Although around here you can change “youth” to tourists.
    Wonderful skies!

  12. Sallyann says:

    More beautiful skies. 🙂
As for the sign … maybe the youths are doing the hunting ?

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Sallyann. 🙂
I’m pretty sure it was the youths doing the hunting (at least I hope that was the case!). It would have made more sense if they had worded it differently. 😀

  13. I’m late with this one, but I had to say, that sign was a great find! 😀

  14. becky6259 says:

Your pictures are always stunning! The sign was a good observation as well — I never thought about the way it was worded until I read your comment, LOL! I did wonder if the sign is old are does it also have the year wrong? Lol

    • Robin says:

Thank you, Becky. 🙂 Good catch! I didn’t notice they had the year wrong. It was a new sign from the looks of things so someone must have messed up on the date, too.

  15. Dana says:

It’s a great idea to pay yourself for exercise and then work towards buying a Vitamix. They are really amazing blenders but yes– not cheap! 🙂 I hope everything is going well in the Bogs.
