Dreaming

Fairy tale woods

Fairy tale woods

life is a garden,
not a road

we enter and exit
through the same gate

wandering,
where we go matters less
than what we notice.

Rain and slush

I don't think we'll be seeing this today.

Sun in the clouds.

I’m writing this during the early morning hours.  It’s just starting to lighten up outside.  Before I could see what was going on outdoors, the local weather folks on television informed me that the icy rain part of the weather front moving through had flown east of us and the precipitation had turned to plain old rain.  Fog is rising from the snow cover.  It’s going to be a slushy day.

Snowscapes

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Red-bellied Woodpecker

There is nothing in the world more beautiful than the forest clothed to its very hollows in snow.  It is the still ecstasy of nature, wherein every spray, every blade of grass, every spire of reed, every intricacy of twig, is clad with radiance.

The wonders of winter

December 2012 019a

You probably don’t have to be a long-time visitor to Life in the Bogs to know winter is my favorite season.  I love it, most especially when there is snow.  Snow is necessary for a proper, enjoyable winter.  I’ve lived in places where they have rainy, dreary winters, and that’s no fun at all.  If gray, wet days are what you experience during the winter months, I can understand not loving the season.

A Friday edition of Thursday Travels: The Ceilidh Trail

Fog and mist on the Sunrise Trail. Nova Scotia. June 2012.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Thursday Travels post.  I know.  It’s Friday, not Thursday.  But I’m off skiing this afternoon and won’t have time to post the photos from that little adventure so you’re stuck with a scheduled post and some travel photos from Nova Scotia today.  In my last Thursday Travels post (Ferries and boats and lighthouses, oh my), M and I had just landed in Nova Scotia.  We left Caribou, Nova Scotia, and went east on the Sunrise Trail, making our way towards Cape Breton.

Sometimes that’s as good as it gets

The elusive male cardinal

I spent a lot of time last winter trying to “capture” the elusive male cardinal.  I set up camp by a window where I’d have the best shot at him.  I’d patiently wait.  And wait.  And wait.  As soon as I had to get up and move for some reason (sometimes just to move!), he would show up and I’d miss the shot.   Or that brilliant red would catch the eye of one of the cats and they would scare him off by jumping up on the windowsill.  Eventually I settled for this photo although I did keep trying throughout the winter.  It was as good as it was going to get.

Peaceful

A peaceful winter's sunset by the pond

This week’s WP Weekly Photo Challenge is Peaceful.  It’s a beautiful word:  peaceful.  Tranquil, calm, not involving violence.  Peaceful happens frequently here at Breezy Acres, especially by the pond, in all seasons.  (Violence happens too, but that’s not today’s theme.)  Winter’s peace has a hush or stillness to it that you don’t find during the more active seasons.  Once the storms that deliver the snow and arctic temperatures move through, sounds are muted and the landscape is softened and whitened.  Even the occasional traffic noises from the road seem like they come from faraway.
