The element of surprise

As you sit on the hillside, or lie prone under the trees of the forest, or sprawl wet-legged by a mountain stream, the great door, that does not look like a door, opens.~ Stephen Graham, The Gentle Art of Tramping, 1926
I have participated in the original, official NaBloPoMo since November of 2006. It was, in a way, a lifeline for me. It was through that first NaBloPoMo that I began to experience a sense of community in what I think of as the outer blogosphere. (I had previously been blogging for years under a pseudonym in a more closed space with a smaller community.) I was going to need my new blogmates and this sense of being in touch with the outer world beginning the following month when M and I made a temporary move to West Chester, Pennsylvania (a town I referred to as Sabbaticalville while we were living there).
The storm approaches

The so-called Frankenstorm, Hurricane Sandy, is on its way. We’ve already had quite a bit of rain from the cold front moving through, although it’s hard to tell now where the rain is originating. It’s currently moving north and west (or coming from the south and east), along with occasional gusty winds. Perhaps some of Sandy’s outer bands are already here.
On the Towpath Trail

I started my ride in Akron and ended in Peninsula where I caught the train back to Akron. It was a good ride. Almost 14 miles when all was said and done. I did get a bit chilled out there. The temperature, close to 70 when I started, dropped about 15 degrees while I was riding. My fingers and toes were numb when I finished. It felt good to sit by the heater on the train and thaw out.

A walk along the Allegheny River

I haven’t had a chance to join you all on your walks yet, having just arrived home a little while ago. I think everyone who needed a little extra time has managed to get their walks in so it probably won’t be necessary to extend the deadline. However, if you want to join in and haven’t had a chance to walk or do your blog post about it yet, let me know. I plan to do the wrap-up either tomorrow or Wednesday and will wait a bit if you need extra time.

Unexpected because the weather prognosticators had been carrying on about rain and wind for about a week before I set out for Pennsylvania to do some hiking, biking, and leaf peeping.
