Sun bathing

Sun bathing

We’re in charge of our photo adventures.  Adventure means taking a different path.  It can mean getting down on the ground for a really low angle shot, or photographing not the entire flower but a backlit petal.

Today’s Capture Your 365 Challenge is Backlit.  I had a little struggle with this one as it’s not something I do very often.  That was one of the reasons I decided to take on some of the prompts.  For the challenge (and the fun of the challenge).

When I got up this morning, I wasn’t sure I would be able to meet this challenge.  Without sunlight, backlit is hard to do (just as the prompt “shadow” gave me trouble a few days ago).  It dawned on me that one of the reasons I give up on photo challenges is because anything requiring bright light in February is usually impossible for me to do.  This is a gray, gray month, heavy with cloud cover.

Not today!  Today the clouds cleared and the sun appeared.  It was a bit too high in the sky for what I hoped to do, but I was so glad to see the sunlight that it didn’t matter.  I’d shoot for silhouettes.

What's that glow in the sky?

What’s that glow in the sky?

I stayed out for a while, doing my own version of winter sunbathing.  The neighbors probably wondered what that crazy lady with the camera was doing, standing in the meadow, head raised towards the sun.  I was manufacturing Vitamin D.  And basking in the light and warmth.

No one lights a lamp in order to hide it behind the door:  the purpose of light is to create more light, to open people’s eyes, to reveal the marvels around.

I’m not sure I got the backlit idea quite right, but I did give it a good try.

I couldn’t resist taking advantage of the sunlight in other ways.  After all, it won’t be here for very long.  The clouds and snow will return tomorrow and Friday.

That should do it from me and from the Bogs for today.  I’m heading back outside to absorb some more light before the sun sets.  Feel free to join me out in the Future Woods.  It’s the best place to catch full sun this time of year.  You’ll also find the best view of the sunset there.

Thank you for visiting.  Have a delightful day, evening, night… wherever and whenever you are on the spectrum of time.  🙂

Long shadows

Long shadows

In the ultimate stillness
Light penetrates the whole realm;
In the still illumination,
There pervades pure emptiness.
When I look back on the
Phenomenal world,
Everything is just
Like a dream.

  1. Oh Robin – I cannot decide if I like “Sunburst in the trees,” “Woodland silhouettes” or “Long shadows” the best – it must be a three-way tie. The back lit trees are stunning!

The Long Shadows one is my favourite.

I find it much easier to do backlit shots, but rarely do I do them on purpose! 😉

    I love the fluffy Sparrow!

  5. Woodland silhouettes is exquisite!

  6. Karma says:

Ahhh sunshine! Thanks for the peek! I’d love to do what you said and turn my face into the sunshine. Surely hard to do in February and good to take advantage whenever possible.

  7. Joanne says:

I think you got “backlit” just right Robin. I love silhouette photos! I think it’s good to see something other than the obvious when taking photos and the sunshine surely helped you a lot. I also like to play around with taking night time silhouettes, when there is a bright moon or a street light behind a subject. The last photo of the blue sky is incredible ~ who would think it was winter in the Bogs! 🙂

You captured the backlit pictures very well! Backlit ANYthing is something I just have never been able to get the hang of, so I always admire when someone does a good job at it.

  9. Backlit pictures turned out very nice – interesting technique.
but glad you did a few of the sunlit ones, too. Cute sparrow – and love the last one
