A walk with gratitude

When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.  Give thanks for the food and the joy of living.  If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

Up until a few years ago, February was my least favorite month of winter.  It’s a short month that somehow manages to stretch into infinity (and beyond).  It’s the month of gray days, cabin fever, and a longing for spring and sunshine and plants sprouting up out of the earth.

Going outside every day, even in February, has helped me move beyond the desire to rush through winter and bring on the next season.  Even so, February can often still feel like a long month.  That’s especially true when we’ve seen little to no sunshine.  People get the winter blues, the February Funk, and it rubs off on those of us who are not so blue or grumpy or yearning.

To live a life of gratitude is to open our eyes to the countless ways in which we are supported by the world around us.  Such a life provides less space for our suffering because our attention is more balanced.  We are more often occupied with noticing what we are given, thanking those who have helped us, and repaying the world in some concrete way for what we are receiving.

As I was out on my walk today, I thought about how grateful I am to be here.  Right here.  Right now.  Walking and living in this beautiful place.  How lucky I am!

It doesn’t matter that it’s another gray and snowy day.  I am grateful to be here no matter what the weather.

M and I have lived here at Breezy Acres for ten years.  During the first year, I was excited and happy and grateful to be a part of this place.  Then the excitement faded with the work, and the weather.  It was too hot.  Too cold.  Too buggy.  Too humid.  I didn’t feel like putting on a hundred pounds worth of layers to go outside.

I still have days like that, when it’s too hot, too cold, too humid, too buggy.  Days when I think to myself, “I don’t feel like going outside today.”  I go outside anyway.

I’m too curious not to go.  I want to see what’s going on out there.  Everything changes overnight, and this little piece of the world is new to me every single day.

In relation to others, gratitude is good manners; in relation to ourselves, it is a habit of the heart and a spiritual discipline.

What are you thankful for today?

That’s it from the Bogs on this gray and snowy Tuesday in February.  Thank you for visiting, and joining me on a slow and thankful walk around the pond.  We’ll be getting more snow tonight and tomorrow.  I think it’s time to build a new snowperson.  Anyone want to help?  I’m not sure the snow is pack-able (we’ve been getting that light and fluffy stuff), but we can give it a try.

February has traditionally been my least favoured month of the year for the opposite reasons to yours, it’s just too hot!

So, what am I grateful for today? The unseasonally cool weather we have here at the moment. I even had to use a blanket last night! I’d love to help build the snowperson with you too. 🙂

  2. SNOW URCHIN! Fabulous!

    You do amazing work.

How nice that you have found a liking for February because these photographs are beautiful. Captures the essence of winter, its beauty and its longing. My favourites are the one with the grass in front of the trees and the picture you call Promising.

  5. What a good practice. There is so much to be grateful for, thanks for a lovely reminder.

  6. There is healing, grace and wisdom to be found in being outdoors. You captured that so beautifully here, today, and for that I offer my gratitude.

  7. I was so thankful for your post today…I read it on my cell phone, in a waiting room as I was waiting for some results…which turned out fine…but your photos and words helped to ground me and realign me with a spirit of thankfulness..thank you, Robin.
And I love your comment about curiosity…I’ve almost given up trying to get myself to walk because “it’s good to exercise”…I’m just too resistant to “should”…So, for the past week, I’ve started to call it “taking my eyes for a walk” or “taking my curiosity for a walk”…both of which are very appealing, tend to get me out the door and are really what I enjoy about walking anyways! 😀

  8. In the U.S. I’ve always thought of February as one last month to have an excuse to stay cozy inside drinking hot chocolate and sitting by a fire. I even like walking in the crisp cold air of February. Here in Oman, for probably only the rest of this month, the weather is lovely. Perfect really. I dread March, when it will surely start heating up!! Gratitude, that each day brings me one day closer to home. 🙂

  9. Appreciating all your sharing of thoughts and quotes about gratitude – your February day is simply beautiful. Morning light is a gift I am thankful for every day, and because of a thin layer of snow this morning I am blessed with snowlight today, too. We might be getting your snowstorm on Friday here, unless it spins out to sea south of us. Love your snow urchin and little sprig of holly…

    Lovely post, Robin!
The one thing I like about February is that it brings with it a longer daylight 🙂

You’ve done a lovely job finding things to like about an un-likable month. I’ve always liked the fact that it is short, for the past 17 years we’ve celebrated dear daughter’s birthday (number 18 this year! Oh my goodness how did I get old enough to be the parent of a legal adult? Surely that’s not so!) and since I’ve worked in a school system I also like February vacation week!
I believe you are quite lucky to have this beautiful property to explore right outside your back door.
