Sometimes you look at an empty valley like this,
and suddenly the air is filled with snow.
That is the way the whole world happened —
there was nothing, and then…But maybe some time you will look out and even
the mountains are gone, the world become nothing
again. What can a person do to help
bring back the world? We have to watch it and then look at each other.
Together we hold it close and carefully
save it, like a bubble that can disappear
if we don’t watch out. Please think about this as you go on. Breathe on the world.
Hold out your hands to it. When mornings and evenings
roll along, watch how they open and close, how they
invite you to the long party that your life is.~ William Stafford
The snow filled the air this morning and, as in the poem by William Stafford, made the world disappear. Sometimes I couldn’t see anything except for the white of the snowflakes as they saturated the landscape.
The snow was so thick at times that my camera refused to focus no matter what tricks I tried. I think it was confused, not knowing what it was I was trying to hone in on. Sometimes I was confused, too. Did I want to capture the trees or the falling snow? The birds? The sky? The pond?
Do you have any plans for the weekend? M and I might go cross-country skiing on Sunday. They had quite a bit of lake-effect snow north of us this week. If the sun comes out as predicted, it’ll be a nice day for skiing. Otherwise, I think we’ll be hanging out here.
In my continual efforts to simplify and downsize, I have decided to spend some time sorting through books for a few hours tomorrow. I have saved a lot of books thinking I might reread them someday, but it has finally hit me that the likelihood of that, for most of these books, is slim to none. There are so many new books I want to read (and so many of those new books are sitting on my to-be-read shelf) that I can’t imagine taking the time to reread old favorites anymore.
Our local library is always happy to take donations of books. I bet they would love some DVD’s, too. It’s about time M and I sorted through that collection as well.
I do believe in simplicity. It is astonishing as well as sad, how many trivial affairs even the wisest thinks he must attend to in a day; how singular an affair he thinks he must omit. When the mathematician would solve a difficult problem, he first frees the equation of all incumbrances, and reduces it to its simplest terms. So simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real. Probe the earth to see where your main roots run.
~ Henry David Thoreau
I’m actually getting excited by the prospect of releasing some of this stuff. I don’t suppose that’s something most people would get enthusiastic about, but I’m easily excited by little things, and projects that open up space. Getting rid of the old to allow room for the new.
Who knows where this could lead? I might even clean out a closet or two. That statement almost made me laugh. With delight. The closets around here are not as crammed and comical as Fibber McGee and Molly‘s, but give us a few more years and they might be.
I’ve spent the past three years choosing words to help me downsize my collection of belongings, and now suddenly, I want to do it. Maybe all I needed was to approach it from a place of love rather than looking at it as a chore.
Nature is pleased with simplicity. And nature is no dummy.
~ Isaac Newton
Well, I think that’s about it from the Bogs on this snowy January day. The pond is solid enough for sledding or walking upon so let’s get the sleds out and go have some fun. I’ll race you to the sledding hill. 🙂
Have a delightful weekend!
Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.
~ Henry David Thoreau
Fabulous! Thanks
You’re welcome. 🙂
Oh, Robin, what a magical snowy day you had! I’m in love with all the birds in the snow – so very pretty. And the Thoreau quotes are perfect. I’ve been doing a little de-cluttering myself, must be something in the air… Keep warm!
Thank you, Barbara. 🙂
Absolutely outstanding winter snow scenes Robin! Every one a real stunner!
Thank you, Phil. 🙂
Oh, the birds are amazing.
Nice you are taking stuff to library – their budgets are so slim these days – and the books will be new to someone.
Enjoy your play with the snowy weekend – one of the best parts must be how quiet and everything is.
Thank you, PhilospherMouse. 🙂 The quiet is one of the things I really enjoy about the snow. It’s amazing how still the world becomes with a good snowfall blanketing the land.
Sheltered and Taking A Respit were my favorites!
I SO BADLY want to try cross country skiing!
Thank you, Colleen. 🙂 (Sheltered is my favorite of the bunch, too.)
I cleaned out a bunch of books, CDs and DVDs last summer when we re-did our living room. Still ended up with a small bookcase of books I hadn’t read! It is so nice to clean out and have empty space in the house. Love looking at the snow. Reminds me why I live in Florida this time of year!
lol, Deborah! Sometimes the snow is why we head to Florida this time of year. 😀
Your quotes on simplicity speaks volume and looking at the birds, they are seem so content having no baggage to carry with them. Nature at it’s best captured by you. Thanks.
Thank you, Seeker. 🙂
the cardinal looks to be in charge! what a beautiful poem, i have not heard it before … holding the world and bringing it back … the long party that is your life … i love the idea of being snowed in .. then sledding on the hill … count me in!
Thank you, Christine. You’re counted in. I have a sled here just for you. 🙂
just right for beginners robin?
Perfect for beginners, Christine. You can steer although that probably won’t be necessary since the tracks are now set (M and I have been sledding) so all you have to do is sit down and let gravity take over. Next thing you know, you’ll be half way out on the pond ready to go again. 🙂
wowee, i am loving it, especially the slideout over the pond!!
Winter scenes + Thoreau = Perspective
Thank you, Frank. Thoreau certainly does bring some perspective to life. 🙂
Oh my goodness, what a magical post Robin! All of those cute, tiny birds, sitting out in the snow! Your amazing photos! And just you talking about cleaning out cupboard, etc from a place of love makes me feel lighter. Enjoy your weekend, with love. 🙂
Thank you, Joanne. 🙂
Wow, looks like the snow was really coming down! Love it!!
It’s still coming down, Michaela. A real winter. Yay! 🙂
The cardinals are certainly happy models for you this winter! They are lovely bright spots of color in your photos. I hope your book-sorting is going well. My husband is a hoarder of paperback books. They are everywhere around here and he does re-read, so I have a hard time getting rid of them. Our local library doesn’t take donations unfortunately so it is difficult to dispose of them anyway. We ended up missing the big snow storm that was headed our way – ironically due to a mass of arctic air that blew in and pushed the storm south – it was too cold to snow, it seems!
Thanks, Karma. They have been very cooperative this year. 🙂
Just beautiful, Robin! I hope you got in some skiing, too.
I have sacks of stuff ready to go – stop by on your way to donate, and you can take mine, too 😉
lol! Will do, Marie.
Thank you. 🙂
What a wonderful post. Not only are the “snow bird” pictures enchanting to me, but I enjoyed the pacing of this post. At the beginning we are led about in a slow, dreamy pace and we end catching your enthusiasm for your downsizing and your sledding! Thanks for taking me along, again.
You’re welcome, Corina. And thank you. 🙂
Wonderful post. 🙂
You have been nominated for a Hug Award. Congratulations ! 😀

Thank you so much, Joseph. 🙂
Hi Robin. Love the ‘glamour shot’. I am also sorting through books. I took one down, deciding to put it in the library box and ended up reading it again. They should have a reality show about sorting through books. Jane
I love that idea, Jane! I would find it quite interesting to watch a reality show about sorting through books. (I wonder if the makes me a nerd? lol!)
What enchanting evocative images, Robin! I love the shot “Sheltering” and the last one with the pine cones, though ALL of them are wonderful.
Thank you, Lynn. 🙂
Food for my soul! I love the birds and the quotes. Especially the first poem. So meaningful it brings tears to my eyes.
Thank you so much, Karen. 🙂
I have donated a lot of my old books throughout the years, and now I’m finding that I could really use some of them back. Ha! I guess I’ll have to try picking select titles up again in a used bookstore. Materialism is a cruel mistress. 🙂
That’s for sure, Dana. 🙂
I wish i could live in similar atmosphere for only 1 week , never been to snowy area
thanks for the beautiful pics 🙂
You’re welcome, Abdul. And thank you for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it. 🙂
