Taken aback

Hey, I put some new shoes on!*

I had a great weekend.  It was good to get out of the chair and away from the computer screen.  Well, not completely away.  I visited a few blogs, answered a few comments, checked email, explored new possibilities.  That sort of thing.  But I spent more time away than here than usual of late, and that was lovely.  I have to tell you that my post on Friday was a bit of a shock to me.  Not when I posted it of course, because I knew what I had written.  I was surprised when my mind and fingers found themselves in agreement about not participating in NaBloPoMo this year.  I hadn’t consulted myself about it.  It was just there, the decision, in spite of having made preparations to participate.  I am pleased I followed my heart.  Once I hit publish on Friday’s post, I felt a sense of great relief.

*From Paolo Nutini‘s New Shoes.  The song is semi-appropriate for my recent life and times.

Stickers and all. (M said I should have removed the stickers from the onions and fruit. I said, “But that’s how they come when you buy them at the grocery store!”)

I went shopping on Saturday.  I don’t normally associate shopping with a great (or lovely) weekend.  Shopping is one of my least favorite activities.  To my great surprise, I enjoyed it this time around.  That may be because I found what I wanted without any trouble, and managed to get pretty decent deals, too.  I have a new winter coat, a ski jacket that I’ve badly needed since my other one was falling to pieces.  Literally.  It was shedding purple everywhere.

Because today’s locally grown garlic comes with a plastic handcuff.

I officially declare, with no authority whatsoever, that it will have to be a snowy winter now that I’ve finally invested in a new jacket.  Oh, and a vest!  Cross-country skiing can really warm a body up so I decided a Thinsulate vest with a fleece would be just the thing for those days that aren’t cold enough for the ski jacket.  I already have the fleece pullovers so all I needed was a vest.

Canvassing

As you may have noticed, I also got new shoes.  I’ve been wanting a pair of lightweight shoes for cross-training (the Tabata interval drills I’ve been doing a couple of times a week).  New Balance had some that interested me since they’re taking a cue from Vibrams.  As much as I love my Vibrams, I don’t really like wearing them for Tabata drills.  So I went to the New Balance store down in Canton, picked out a pair of shoes I liked after asking which shoes would best suit my needs and feet, and as luck would have it, they had a pair that fit my feet.  This is not usually the case.  Cute shoes often elude me because I have wide feet.  I am seriously considering buying another pair just for wearing when I’m out and about.  Now that I know the style and size that fits my feet, I can order them online the next time I receive an email from New Balance offering me ten or fifteen percent off.

Butternut squash and kale

Other things I did this weekend include playing with my food, photographically and in a culinary way.  M and I made this fantastic sauteed butternut squash and kale.  It was like a warm salad, including walnuts, dried cranberries, goat cheese, and lemon.  Incredible combination of sweet, tart, and bitter.  M and I often pair up in the kitchen on weekends.  It’s fun, and it makes the work part of cooking (the peeling, slicing, chopping, and dicing) go faster.  M took care of the butternut squash while I chopped up the kale.  I think he got through the squash faster than I ever could (I find them difficult to peel and cut).

The barn with Saturday’s cloudy sky overhead.

The weekend weather has been cloudy with the occasional spritz of rain or snow.  It’s the kind of weather that gives me a good excuse for sitting by the fireplace and reading a good book.  I’ve been enjoying A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1).  There’s nothing like sinking into a good fantasy.  I took long walks, meditated, did chores.  It was a full weekend, all in all.

Once upon a time

That’s about it from the Bogs for now.  It’s still chilly and cloudy here.  The weather folks keep saying the sun will come out again soon.  They said that on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and this morning.  They’ve been wrong so far.  But the ground is starting to dry up, the creek has moved back into its usual banks, and a walk around the pond can be surprising.  You never know what you’ll see this time of year.  There are two deer living in the woods.  Ducks or geese fly in every now and then, and the woodpeckers are drumming away in the woods.

Downy Woodpecker. It’s not a very good shot, but I’m lucky he stayed still for as long as he did.

Thanks for dropping by.  How was your weekend?

  2. Guess what I just heard on CNN? Romney is making yet another stop in Cleveland on Tuesday. There and Pittsburgh. Bet you can’t wait! So happy I don’t life in Ohio right about now. What a crazy time for your guys. LOVE your shoes. Sometimes time away from the blogosphere is just what the doctor ordered. SO happy you had a good break. Congrats on your shopping.
    Hugs,
    kathy

  3. Glad you had a good weekend! I also don’t care for shopping, that’s why I do the vast majority of it online! Too many times, I’ve gone to a store, only to find out that the item I wanted wasn’t in stock…. at least when I shop online, I can just go to a different website (right from the comfort of my own home)! My weekend was fairly low-key. The boys wanted to wear their Halloween costumes again and play in the back yard. Never left the house! 🙂 Sometimes I like it that way….. 😉

      Thanks, Holly. 🙂

I do quite a bit of shopping online when I can, too. Shoes can be difficult, though, unless I’m buying a similar pair, brand, etc. Best to try them on when I can. And boy, do I know what you mean about spending a day at home and never leaving the house! It’s wonderful when it happens.

I love your shoes and those veggie pics! 🙂 They look very antiqued and rich in colour. Never mind the labels… adds a bit of ‘now’ to them!

I wish I could get a decent pair of shoes or trainers. As well as wide feet I have hammer toes and most shoes don’t have a footbed that’s deep enough.

  5. Love the shoes. Let’s face it, shoes are how we met so shoes and you are “our” thing. 🙂

mmmm, love your kale and butternut salad …. and those dark cloudy skies over the barn …. the shoes look great, such a cheery red … i am just putting my red joggers out for the tip after 12 years, and i did find them in a charity store even then …. we are pulling garlic here, such a joy! gorgeous photography robin, i will soon have time to rejoin you in the blogosphere 🙂

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Christine. 🙂

I keep my shoes around for a long while, too. Now that I’ve switched to mostly the “barefoot” type of shoes (Vibrams — with the toes), I wanted to replace some of my regular shoes with similar technology (or lack of technology since they are lightweight). Switching back and forth between shoes with support and shoes without is confusing for my muscles.

      Mmmm… garlic! Sounds yummy.

  7. Red shoes are perfect – for any time of year – but especially winter…matches the once upon a time leaf!
    (And vests are a wonder)

    • Robin says:

This is my first winter vest, PhilosopherMouse, so I’m glad to hear they are a wonder. If what they say about global warming is true and we have another mild winter, the vest will probably get more wear than the ski coat. (I hope not!)

  8. artsifrtsy says:

Good for you! Love this set of shots, as always. I like those shoes too, but I’m pretty attached to my Vibrams. Wish they were better in the rain.

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Lorrie. 🙂

The rain (and snow) are included in the reasons why I decided to invest in a different kind of “barefoot” shoe. I love my Vibrams, but they aren’t practical at all during the winter months. I’d end up with frostbite if we have one of our typical winters. I thought about buying the socks that fit with the Vibrams, but that wouldn’t solve the problem of wet feet when it rains.

      • artsifrtsy says:

I have a leather pair and with the socks they stay dry – but they are not nearly as flexible. I went out in the rain today and think mine may be put away until spring:(

Love the food pics – have been having fun in the kitchen too! Isn’t this time of the year just perfect for cooking??!!! Love the garlic shots too – such rich colour.

  10. mobius faith says:

Love the still lives!!!! The shoes don’t do anything for me. I’m trying to “stamp out pedi vice” LOL

THe food looks great – what time should I join you and “M” for dinner? LOL.

I am an evil person. I covet those red shoes.

  12. Chloe says:

i like your post processing on the vegetable photos, my weekend was lovely as well x

  13. Those are awesome shoes.. I hope we get to see the rest of your purchases? I’m glad you’ve made a decision that sits well with you.. it’s important to do that I think. I love your “spritz” of rain description.. it sounds like a refreshing drink:)

  14. YAY! Another Game of Thrones convert! I started the series right after the first book came out in paperback, and was thoroughly immersed in that world long before HBO’s adaptation…Hope you enjoy them as much as I do…

    • Robin says:

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Marie, and I’m forcing myself not to read the next one just yet because I was recently informed that there will be seven books in the series, and the author is taking his time. I don’t know where I got the idea it was a trilogy. I swore I wouldn’t read another series longer than three books. The authors usually end up dying before they finish! (Think “Dune” and “The Wheel of Time”). Oh well. I’m into it now, for better or for worse. I’ll keep praying George R. R. Martin lives long enough to finish the series.

      • It’s a real catch-22 – the books take forever, but if he churned them out quickly, they wouldn’t be the detailed, nuanced world that makes them so wonderful…George has PROMISED that he has told his assistant how he intends to end things, just in case.
        Glad you enjoyed the first!

I think the “when I feel like it” way is a great way to blog! 😉 There is a fun sense of community and I’ve made the acquaintance of so many that I never would have before through blogging, but it should never (unless you are someone who makes a living from it) be something you feel like you “have” to do, in my opinion. Enjoy your blogging freedom, and I’ll definitely be back to comment when you do post again! 🙂

P.S. Is that a trick of the light or does your downy woodpecker have a slight blue hue on top of its head?

    • Robin says:

LOL! You should know, Karma, since that’s your way of blogging. I agree. It’s better to post when I want to rather than feeling I should. I’m not sure why I felt I should, anyhow. It’s not my job and nobody is paying me.

I think it’s the texture I used causing the blue hue on the woodpecker’s head. The sky was blown out (overexposed) so I added the texture to compensate.

Nice shoes … and why am I not surprised about the color? Love the fruits and veggie shots! 🙂

I love your comment on not consulting yourself before just deciding something! I know exactly what you mean; I’ve had the same experience. Um, no complaints, but how did I get here?

  21. Marianne says:

Love the new shoes, Robin. The kale and butternut squash salad looks yummy! I like the diamond shaped light showing up behind the Downy Woodpecker. 🙂

  22. nigel says:

    Loving those new shoes!

  23. I was surprised to see the pictures of your new shoes, Robin, as I just bought some red lightweight tennis shoes that look similar to yours, but they’re Brooks. I bought them when I was home in the US this summer. Butternut squash and kale salad sounds wonderful. 🙂
