Seasonal shifts

Near sunset yesterday

As I sat outside yesterday evening watching the storm clouds move through, I had to keep reminding myself that it’s still February.  Technically, it’s winter.  In case you’re wondering, this is what it looked like last year on this date.

The same thoughts held true this morning as I took my walk around the pond and back into the woods.  I heard spring peepers this morning.  Spring peepers in February!  Don’t they know it’s supposed to snow this weekend?  What are they thinking, rousing this early in the season?

A clearing

I can only assume Mother Nature has a reason for waking everyone up early this year.

The last of the winter pansies. (See the tulip coming up in the background?)

The surest sign of spring was making himself known yesterday evening and this morning.  The red-winged blackbirds are back.  I know most people associate robins with the first sign of spring.  Robins don’t always migrate and we do tend to see them every now and then throughout the winter months.  The Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds website has this to say about the red-winged blackbirds:

In the North, their early arrival and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring.

So I guess that makes it official.  Spring has arrived in spirit if not on the calendar.

These cheerful little fellows have been trying to tell me for over a week now that spring is here whether I believe it or not.  I think they’re a tad insulted that I chose to believe the red-winged blackbird’s return over their message.  In my defense, the crocuses have been known to show their happy faces a little too early from time to time.

Pussy willow opening and reaching for the sky

It’s a beautiful day for a walk.  The birds are serenading the earth and sky.  The sun is shining and warming things up to a lovely 50 degrees.  I even heard the buzz of insects although I’m not sure if they were flies or bees.  Flies, I expect.

Today's view of the pond

The fish are active, rippling around the pond.  No sign of the turtles, frogs, or snakes just yet.

The dried flowers and grasses in the meadows are looking prettier than usual.  Perhaps they’re showing off, letting Spring know that there is beauty in Winter too.

Yes, it’s a very good day for a walk.  Thank you so much for joining me.  It’s nice to have company as I meander along the trails to see what’s happening around the pond.

Keep knocking and the joy inside will
eventually open a window and look
out to see who is there.

Spring does seem to be coming early this year, doesn’t it? I LOVE that top photo of the sky with the yellows and greys. I hope all of the flowers and buds don’t wither if/when the snow comes again this weekend.

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Dana. 🙂

I don’t think the cold and snow will last long enough (this time around) to cause too much harm. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

  2. TBM says:

Great photos. It was 60 degrees in London today…weird huh?

  3. captureford says:

The flowers are beautifully vibrant! Very nice!

  4. Susan Okaty says:

Days like today are such a tease. It was up to 72 degrees, but tomorrow afternoon a front will come in with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour, and Saturday will be in the low 50’s and Sunday only in the 40’s. I’m looking forward to steady warmer weather, but I have to keep telling myself that it is still February. Not for long! Loved your pictures.

  5. Gorgeousness to be sure. I love these and the ones from last year are simply breathtaking.

  6. Ellen says:

things have changed a lot all around the globe … enjoy the early spring!!!!

  7. ~mimo~ says:

It is definitely something to think about… times of change! Gorgeous photos as usual!

I’ve noticed the bird songs for several days now. I don’t have any crocuses up yet, (but then I can’t remember for sure if we have any here). A lot of my perennials are well on ther way and that has concerned me some.

It’s so early that I’ve been afraid to hope it’s spring. Maybe I should believe.

I know what you mean, Christine. I keep expecting winter to return with a vengeance. Judging by the sound of the blustery winds outside as I type, it’s coming in fast and hard for the weekend. I think as long as it doesn’t stay cold and snowy too long, the flowers and trees and other springlike things should be okay. I hope. 🙂

  9. I think everyone’s ready for Spring…even though we’ve had such a mild winter!

    • Robin says:

I’ve been kind of holding out for winter, Travel Spirit. I like the snow and playing in the snow. But since winter decided to play coy this year, I’m ready for spring. 🙂

Wow, flowers blooming … does not look like winter at all.

Our early Spring type weather has disappeared and my world has turned white. We had about 6-8 inches of snow on Monday night and this weekend we are expecting 7-9 more inches. Guess winter finally got here … the snowmobile lovers and skiers are extremely happy for this first opportunity to get out into the snow all winter … I am ready for it to go away … it came to the party too late. 😉

  11. Margie says:

Glad to see your first signs of spring! I ventured outside today to see if spring had arrived early here. Nope. Good thing – it’s snowing out now!

  12. So jealous! We’re not seeing signs of Spring in Colorado yet. It’s been extremely windy (100 mph+ gusts) and dustings of snow. At least I have your blog to look at!

  13. The rabbits built a nest in the vegetable garden – that was my sign that spring may truly be early.
    It’s snowing a little this morning, but it’s 40 degrees…
Beautiful walk for you…thanks (again) for sharing it!

  14. Happy Early Spring, Robin! The flowers are so colorful and I love the dramatic mood in the first three shots…

  15. Pussy Willows, peepers and crocuses? I’m moving, that’s it!! Packing up and heading to an early spring!! You’re sooo lucky!!

  16. Karma says:

Wow, spring is really springing around you! Peepers and crocusses! Nice! When I see these early signs I always cringe a little bit (because I worry about them!) and hope that Mama Nature will be kind to them.

PS – haven’t been to look at your photo hunt just yet because I haven’t posted my own, but I am looking forward to it! You always do a lovely job 🙂

  17. Pat Bean says:

    Your photos touch my soul.

  18. Kathy says:

It is the oddest winter! I can’t believe you’re showing signs of spring already. Lucky you. Enjoy it… I’m sure it will be weeks or months before we’ll see flowers again. But this winter, you really don’t know.

    • Robin says:

It’s hard to predict what will happen, Kathy. Warm-cold-warm-cold. Snow-sun-blustery winds. Hopefully those early signs of spring will weather whatever the seasons throw at them. 🙂

  19. Sallyann says:

Love the colour on the last of your winter pansies, it deserves a huge cheer for seeing us through the darker months now it can relax. 🙂

  20. The last three are gorgeous!

  21. […] will be a true herald of spring for us.  I haven’t heard or seen any yet.  Last year I wrote about their return on February 23rd.  I’ll have to go out and have a good listen for them […]
