Thawing out

Water streaming under the snow

We’re having a winter warm-up here in the Bogs today.  There is still plenty of snow and ice to be found, but you can hear the water rushing downhill under the snow and ice.

The pond is still cold and blue, the snow and ice slowly melting.

Water is bubbling out from the pond overflow pipe into the creek in the woods.

I could hear the water babbling long before I reached the woods while out on my walk today.  It’s the reason I went into the woods, perhaps not a wise choice during a thaw and with just enough snow cover to hide what’s underneath.  I slid my way down the hill, stumbled over a few downed tree branches, and fell a few times.  Not to worry, though.  I wasn’t injured.  The snow and my layers of clothing are good at cushioning any trips and falls.  Besides, I’m good at falling.  I do it a lot.

One of the reasons I took the risk of going down into the woods was to see the creek.  It’s always so beautiful back there after we’ve had a decent snowfall.  It’s one of my favorite places to visit during the winter months, and it is worth the effort, the stumbles, the slides, and the falls.  There is something magical about the creek in the winter.

A small mountain of snow

I like the shapes and texture of the snow when it starts to thaw.  It collapses a bit, sometimes molding around the mounds of grasses and other plants in the meadows.

Cross-country ski tracks

I stayed out for about two hours today.  It’s sunny and warm.  I know most people wouldn’t consider 34 degrees (F) warm, but after a few days of below freezing temperatures, 34 degrees feels downright balmy to me.

Yesterday I went cross-country skiing for the first time this season.  I didn’t last too long.  About 30 minutes.  And I was a little shaky, something to be expected the first time out.  I was pleasantly exhausted when I finished.

Bo

Bo and his people (M the Younger and Merdi) came for a visit yesterday, too.  Bo likes snow so much that he joyfully leaps and bounds around in it, every now and then planting his face deep down into the white stuff as if it’s the most wonderful thing on the whole planet and he can’t get enough of it.

It is a delight watching him play in the snow.

That’s it from the Bogs for today.  Thank you for visiting.  You’d better hurry on outside if you want to leap and bound in the snow.  It will be in the mid-40s tomorrow.  I doubt there will be much snow left after that.

Letting Go:  Of excuses.

Really wonderful shots! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  2. I’m so glad to hear you felt well enough to go cross-country skiing even for a little while. I suspect that’s a good sign. Fun to see Bo playing in the snow. Our Ralph loves it, as well. Take care, my friend—————-
    Hugs,
    Kathy

  3. 34 degrees sounds wonderful! It IS winter after all 🙂
We were in the 70’s today, and will be again tomorrow, and that’s just not right!
    Beautiful winter wonderland!

70s wouldn’t seem right to me either, Michaela. I like the drastic change of seasons we have here. I don’t think I’d do well in a more tropical climate.

You have such a wonderful place. I was happy to read that you were able to get out and enjoy it. The thaw is fine with me. I’m looking forward to the next few days.

It is a wonderful place to live, Cecelia, although I often think people would be surprised to see it as a whole rather than as one small piece at a time.

Hi Robin. I like those bubbles! I also like your idea of being good at falling. I am good at dropping things… feels like a positive turn… jane

I wish I shared the doggy joy of snow. Mine are still awaiting the happy white stuff – though none is in our forecast any time soon. Love the pictures of Bo’s enjoyment.

    • Robin says:

      Thanks, Karma. 🙂

I wish I could be more doggy-like in my attitudes. They seem to have the right idea about joy, rest, and friendship.

  8. 34 degrees and snow? Wonderful! And cross country skiing? Wow! Would love to try that one day.

It’s tons of fun, Teresita, although it is a lot of work. Cross-country skiing is a great calorie burner. What I like best about it is that it allows me to go further out into the woods after a good snowfall than I could/would while walking. I’d like to try snowshoeing this year, if we ever get enough snow for it.

Great photos, Robin. Bo likes snow as much as my young son liked the water when I took him to water babies at just a few months old. He splashed and wriggled and laughed for the whole time. The instructor had never seen such a sight before.

    Glad you’re feeling better, Robin.

I also excel at falling, it’s the landing part I struggle with. I love Bo!

  13. Bo seems to have a zest for living! I love the picture of the blue bubbles on the dark water…

  14. Great shots – could almost hear the sounds

  15. Fantastic winter photography! 🙂

  16. Dana says:

Those pictures of Bo playing in the snow really brought a smile to my face this evening, Robin. Animals are so great– they have such unabashed excitement and love for things. Wouldn’t it be nice to be like that every now and then? 🙂

    • Robin says:

I would love to be like that every now and then, Dana. Sometimes I find myself on the verge of it, and then the adult part of me kicks in and I never quite tumble into that state of joyful abandon. Might be time to start letting go of “the adult.” 🙂

  17. I love the bubbly picture, but the creekside snow pics are my favorite.

“something magical about the creek in winter” – yes! 🙂

  19. We STILL haven’t had any more snow since that major snowfall in early November! A light dusting here and there, but it always goes away within a day. I love seeing Bo jump and play in the snow!! Reminds me of the tiger cubs we have at our local zoo – watching them on their webcam when someone filled their little wading pool with snow. They were so apprehensive at first, but after they decided that it wasn’t going to hurt them, they looked like they were having the time of their lives!! I know my boys wish we had snow, they haven’t been able to use their sleds yet. I’m sure we won’t be able to get by the whole season like this, though…. the snow always finds its way here….
