Blue Hen Falls

Blue Hen Falls, also located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, is described on various websites as small, not interesting, and unimpressive.  It is small compared to Brandywine Falls, and perhaps not as interesting or impressive, but I thought it was beautiful, and certainly much more peaceful even though this waterfall was also running more water than usual.

The Blue Hen Falls Trail is an easy to moderate 1.5 mile hike.  We didn’t hike the entire trail because it was raining and close to sunset.

That means we missed the next waterfall, Buttermilk Falls which is described as prettier and more interesting than Blue Hen Falls.  Another reason we passed on continuing downstream to see Buttermilk Falls is because it was unlikely we’d be able to get there.  The trail crosses the stream three times (no bridges on that part of the trail), and with the water running high, we weren’t sure we could cross Spring Creek.

It is said that Blue Hen Falls is haunted by a young girl who was murdered there 20 years ago.  Rumor has it that very often blue orbs show up in photos taken during the daytime, and that these blue orbs are the girl’s spirit still roaming the woods around the falls.  I did not find blue orbs in any of my photos.  (I didn’t know to look for them either.  I didn’t find out it is haunted until I looked up information about the falls for this post.)

How was your Christmas?  M and I had a lovely day, spent with M the Younger and Merdi, his lovely wife.  Instead of cooking one big meal, I made a variety of tapas.  I also tried to keep the food fairly light (not fatty) and healthy.  No overly cheesy dishes, although it was a little carb heavy since several of the things I made required bread as a vehicle for the food to go from plate to mouth.

I’m thinking of going back to a gluten-free diet soon so it was nice to enjoy some freshly baked breads.  I don’t eat much bread anymore.

A few years ago I pared down my diet, omitting wheat, meat, and dairy from it.  I often think of it as one of the healthiest times in my life.  I had a lot more energy, my skin looked good, and most importantly, I felt good.  Going gluten-free at that time was a little more difficult than it is now.  It’s much easier to find gluten-free breads and pastas these days.  Because I don’t eat much bread anymore and I’m enjoying a whole host of grains other than wheat, switching over to a gluten-free diet won’t be the big deal it was back then.  Plus M is very good at making and baking gluten-free breads that taste good and don’t have the density of a rock.

That’s about it from the Bogs for today.  Thank you for joining me on my hike to Blue Hen Falls.  I hope your holidays were filled with love and fun.  We’re having a sunny day here in the Bogs so I think I’ll head on outside and see what’s going on around the pond.  You’re welcome to come along if you like.

Or you can have a seat here by the waterfall and enjoy the sight and sound of the water as it makes its way over the rocks.

  7. Beautiful photos Robin. It’s such a peaceful story today, as I could well imagine the cooler air and the sounds of the waterfall.

It’s great to hear you all had an enjoyable Christmas. And isn’t the comment from your dad the greatest!? 😀 He sounds so sweet, your # 1 fan, no doubt.

      Thank you, Joanne. 🙂

And yes, the comment from my dad is the greatest. It’s nice to finally have a member of my family reading my blog. AND commenting, too. Yay!

The recent rain enhances the pic. The shading on the first two pics captures my attention. Filters? Thanks for sharing and glad you had a good Christmas!

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Frank. 🙂

No filters. I set the white balance on my camera to Open Shade. This gives everything a warm, golden glow. The first photo has more glow to it due to vignetting done in a golden shade using Picnik (picnik.com).

Lovely falls – thank you! I keep thinking about changing my diet, but living in New Orleans makes it such a challenge – there’s so much deliciousness! I go with an “everything in moderation” philosophy and we eat mostly vegetarian at home. So for now it pretty much works out. But I could definitely benefit from cutting some sugar. 🙂

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Carla. 🙂

If I lived in New Orleans, I doubt I could change my diet. The food there is so amazing. Moderation is a good way to go.

lovely … When I hike the waterfalls here in Minnesota, reaching the falls is a reward … the end of a successful hunt. Once there, it is a must to slow down rest and take in the peacefulness it creates … the sounds, the beauty of the flowing water must be allowed to sink into you … I love the bench picture … wish there was one just like it at my favorite waterfall, I think I could sit there for hours. Thanks for sharing your Falls …

    • Robin says:

You’re welcome, Bearyweather. And thank you. I love the way you describe your hikes to the waterfalls in Minnesota. Reaching the falls certainly is a reward in and of itself. 🙂

  15. Robin, you have a gift for capturing the essence of a place with your camera.

I´d love to have a sit there by the waterfalls!!!

Just a question, when you changed your diet, how long did it take to see the first results? I mean, the easiest way, the external ones (the other ones requires blood tests 😦

    • Robin says:

Ellen: I noticed a change within about a week or two. It’s amazing how fast a good diet can make a difference. I lost about 14 lbs. in three weeks even though I wasn’t dieting and certainly didn’t go hungry.

      • Ellenlen says:

Good!! I meant other changes, maybe you felt more energetic or your skin got better, that type of things. Losing weight is a plus!!! When I have to go on a diet because my cholesterol level got too high, I lose weight too!! thing is that I´m thin and after the diet I can´t find anything to wear, everything is too big!!

Beautiful pictures. I love the blue tones of the last two especially.

You know Robin, I’m finding the same thing about the gluten-free diet. Over the last several months I’m paying a lot of attention to the foods I’m eating and the relationship to how I feel physically. When I eliminate gluten, eggs, sugary snacks and stick to lots of green, vegetables and fruits, I feel much much better. The RA symptoms improve a lot.

More recently, I’ve done some reading up and experimenting with the food combining philosophy. It makes sense and my digestive system feels much better when I adhere to the rules.

Your peaceful hike through the woods sounds like an activity I would welcome also.

    • Robin says:

Marianne: It’s amazing, isn’t it, how food can affect us? I am so glad to hear that your new diet is helping with your RA symptoms. Yay!! 🙂

  19. Love the colors in these, they are so dreamy!
