Abstracts in nature

There’s not much new in the Bogs today.  Well, that’s not true.  It’s a new day and I bet there are all sorts of new things happening.  The ice forming on top of the pond, for instance.  The temperature was 16 degrees (F) when I woke up this morning.  A few more cold nights like that and the pond will be frozen over.

We won’t have a few more nights like that, though.  It’s gradually warming up, and by tomorrow night the lows will be above freezing.  We won’t be ice skating on the pond anytime soon.

It’s sunny and mostly clear today.  I waited until it warmed up to about 36 degrees to go out for my walk.  Even with the sun and the temperature above freezing, the ground is crunchy with frost and ice.

I walked down to the woods today, to have a look at the ice forming around the creek.  That’s where all the best patterns in the ice can be found.  Last year I wrote about the bones of winter, which is how I think of the ice that forms early in the season.  Sometimes the ice formations even look a little like bones (as seen in the post I just linked to).

There were a couple of squirrels running around in the woods.  A blue jay whistled and jeered overhead.  Otherwise, it was pretty quiet out there.

Nature has undoubtedly mastered the art of winter gardening and even the most experienced gardener can learn from the unrestrained beauty around them.

It’s not all ice and frost out there.  The sun casts a golden light in the woods and around the pond.

It is lovely.  And it is enough.
