Abstracts in nature

There’s not much new in the Bogs today.  Well, that’s not true.  It’s a new day and I bet there are all sorts of new things happening.  The ice forming on top of the pond, for instance.  The temperature was 16 degrees (F) when I woke up this morning.  A few more cold nights like that and the pond will be frozen over.

We won’t have a few more nights like that, though.  It’s gradually warming up, and by tomorrow night the lows will be above freezing.  We won’t be ice skating on the pond anytime soon.

It’s sunny and mostly clear today.  I waited until it warmed up to about 36 degrees to go out for my walk.  Even with the sun and the temperature above freezing, the ground is crunchy with frost and ice.

I walked down to the woods today, to have a look at the ice forming around the creek.  That’s where all the best patterns in the ice can be found.  Last year I wrote about the bones of winter, which is how I think of the ice that forms early in the season.  Sometimes the ice formations even look a little like bones (as seen in the post I just linked to).

There were a couple of squirrels running around in the woods.  A blue jay whistled and jeered overhead.  Otherwise, it was pretty quiet out there.

Nature has undoubtedly mastered the art of winter gardening and even the most experienced gardener can learn from the unrestrained beauty around them.

It’s not all ice and frost out there.  The sun casts a golden light in the woods and around the pond.

It is lovely.  And it is enough.

That’s about it from the Bogs for this December day.  Thank you so much for dropping by to join me on another walk around Breezy Acres.  I hope you enjoyed Nature’s artwork as much as I did.  🙂

  1. Wow, I love the abstract images, Robin. Stunning. I love looking at your photos, because, as I’ve said before, I think they are teaching me to see better. Thank you!

You’re welcome, Kathy M. And thank you. 🙂

Photography has taught me to see better, too. I’m often surprised at the patterns and abstracts I find when I’m out and about.

Great capture …. I love what ice can do. Where did you find those ice crystals in that last icy shot? Were they really that large or do they just look extra big because of a zoom?
Your new header of the moon is really special … naturally colored? or did you play with it?

    • Robin says:

      Thanks, Bearyweather. 🙂

I played with the moon in the header and tweaked the color. It had a ghastly yellow tinge to it straight out of the camera. The ice crystals were small. I didn’t even notice them until I uploaded the photo and got a good look.

  3. This reminds me of a conversation I once had with a good friend who happens to be an abstract expressionist. I was fascinated to have him point out that nature often has patterns or designs which closely resemble abstract art. Those are some striking images, Robin!

  4. You can actually see the crystal formations in the one photo–super cool. Yesterday we went hiking about 20 miles from here and I also got some ice shots. The first one looks quite like sand.

  5. I had no idea that ice forms beautiful patterns like those….the photos are amazing.

These are so gorgeous! I love the abstract ice shots.

  7. On first glance, I thought the first photo was an aerial shot of farmland…

I very much enjoyed this walk! Crunching ice on a path sounds lovely, especially if there’s somewhere warm to return after the walk, like a cozy fireplace! 🙂

  15. good job, abstract?????
