Unique smiley

Is it just me or did life all of sudden become busy??  My to-do list is so long that I almost feel paralyzed by it.  Procrastination is tempting, and seems easier than prioritizing.

Aging mushroom. (The giant shrinks.)

In reality and in the long run, procrastination is never the easy way to go.  It leads me to doing busy-work or starting a new and complicated project.  Ultimately, it is stressful and more work than the work I was putting off.

Ground lights

I sat down this morning and made a list in an attempt to prioritize things.  In the end I decided that the outdoor work has to come first.  The weather is much too beautiful for me to be spending my days indoors, and this exquisite weather will not last forever.

Today's view of the pond.

See what I mean?  Look how amazingly beautiful it is outside.  Who would want to be indoors on a day like today?  Certainly  not me.  I bet you wouldn’t, either.

On the road. Processed in Picnik using the 1960s treatment.

We had dinner with M the Younger and his wife last night.  Merdi and I went out shopping first, looking for fabric to make some Roman shades for the sun porch.  The talented Merdi is going to make them for me.  I didn’t realize shopping for fabric would be so difficult.  I did find something I love, but it was (naturally) one of the most expensive fabrics in the store.  Buying enough of that would defeat the whole purpose of having my daughter-in-law make the shades for us rather than purchase them.  But, oh, it was cute and beautiful, making everything else pale by comparison.

On the road II. (Without the 1960s treatment.)

I did bring home some swatches.  I’ll have a good look at them and will eventually be happy enough to settle for one of them.  Or I’ll keep looking.  There is no rush.  We won’t need them until next summer since cooler weather means no need to block the sunlight.

Today’s outdoor work was a continuation of yesterday’s garden clean-up.  While I’ve been busy with that, M has been repainting the side of the house that gets blasted by the wind.  M the Younger will be coming over sometime in the next few days to help with that.  Nobody, it seems, wants to volunteer to help out in the garden.  Hmph.

That’s okay.  Weeding, once the procrastination ends and the actual work begins, can be very meditative.  I always come away from the garden feeling good.  Tired, but good.

We will probably start the chipping and shredding work soon.  We had a lot of branches come down this year and did a lot of trimming.  That translates into a lot of mulch once we finish running it all through the chipper/shredder.

Chipping and shredding is not a meditative process.  It is important to focus on the task at hand for safety reasons.  It is also important to wear the proper gear which includes ear plugs, gloves, and safety glasses.  Even so, I usually end up with a few scrapes and bruises from flying wood chips.

Another view of the back corner of the pond from this morning. Can you spot the Great Blue Heron?

Having put in a full day’s work, we’ll be relaxing around a campfire this evening.  You’re welcome to join us if you happen to be in the vicinity.  We might even roast a few marshmallows while we’re out there enjoying this splendiferous autumn evening.

(Note:  Today’s post title is once again courtesy of the search engine terms.  “Unique smiley” is a result of this post.  The other possibilities I considered were “squash yellow vegetable erotica” because it’s so bizarre, and “wood tree tops” because I often state the obvious.)

The day at the pond looks wonderful … such a beautiful day .. we have had several similar days last week.
As for your post title … the first thing I was looking for in your post was a smiley faced picture. Probably because as a challenge to my photography students, I always ask them to look for a natural smiley face in their surroundings and take a picture of it. They have found so many amazing things that with just a touch of imagination the smile is obvious. (For example: an electric outlet, the front of a truck with a plow and the bark pattern of a tree)

I wish this weather would last forever ….

  2. “Yellow squash vegetable erotica” is hysterical! Speaking of yellow, I can’t believe how beautifully your trees are changing color. That has yet to happen much here yet.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Yes, you did the right thing by choosing out of doors today. Glorious day and glorious photos. I found the heron. . . after looking for a bit. You have a wonderful place. Today was Yom Kippur so we did not get out. I almost wish that this particular holiday would fall on a gloomy day because it was difficult to stay in all day on a day like this. Hopefully there will be many more beautiful days before winter sets in. Thanks for the eye candy. 🙂

You’re welcome, Cecelia. I’m glad you enjoyed the stroll around the pond. We should still have a few more good days before the winter gloom arrives. 🙂

Robin, I love your photos. I would hang them on my walls! I didn’t see the heron, but will look on a larger screen when I have the chance. Great retro look of your processed street photo.

Glorious photos of a glorious season of the year. Ah, my favorite even with a busy schedule.

  7. Judith says:

Your pond is so beautiful I would be tempted to sit there all day with laptop on lap or a table probably, and while away the hours. So no work would get down either inside or out.
I use picnic a lot but haven’t tried the 1960s treatment – will put that on my To Do List.
And I must comment on the giant mushroom. I had imagined you were going to make mushroom soup with it, but alas…

  8. No one WANTS to help weed around here, either…but, sometimes they come out to talk, and wind up with a hoe in their hands!
Love the photos of the road, both processed and un-…you have more color than we do!

    • Robin says:

lol, Marie! They won’t come near the garden if I’m out there weeding as they know they will be commandeered for some chore or another. lol!

      Thanks. 🙂

It can be so challenging when we get soooo busy and try to prioritize and get things done. I remember almost going crazy the first two weeks in September, and the last three days of this past week were a little busy, too. Don’t know if you’re familiar with Byron Katie’s work? She says that it never bothers her if she doesn’t answer all her email or get her things done. She says that what happens is suppose to be what happens. I am aiming for that kind of view to solidify.

    • Robin says:

I am not familiar with Byron Katie, Kathy. I’ll look into her work. I would like to have that kind of attitude too. Thank you for the recommendation. 🙂

Gorgeous view of the pond today, Robin. Too bad I’m not close enough to drop over for tonight’s campfire. The weather is lovely in southern Ontario as well. I think I could take it until December.

  11. ceciliag says:

It all looks gorgeous, and i am so with you on the procrastination problem. Once I have done my mandatory three hours writing maybe I really will go and start the clean up in the flower gardens, you are right about once you start it becomes a joy.

  12. Pat Bean says:

Your photos were so awesome today, they literally brought tears to my eyes. The first one and the lone yellow leaf were my favorites, and of course the pond. Thanks so much for starting my day off with beauty

  13. Sunshiney pictures… just what I needed on this dreary, rainy day.

  14. I was fraught with the same problem today: nice outdoor temps but too much inside yet to do.The colorful leaves are exquisite. I did enjoy and needed this walk today.

methinks you should just have ‘conscripted’ any unwilling volunteers Robin, ..’tis what the governments do… or pay them the ‘kings shilling’… (mind you nowadays the shillings become an astronomical figure. Can one afford bribery? 😉 ) … Your first photo held me spellbound., a time portal between the two tree trunks, I wonder if I could go thro’ mayhap I’d find my girl waiting.. or maybe not… There is indeed much beauty outside, and you’ve captured it perfectly… xPenx

    • Robin says:

lol, Pen! You’re right. I shall remember conscription the next I need help in the garden. They’ll have to work for food. I’m low on the “kings shilling.” 😉

  16. Karma says:

I agree – this weekend has been way too beautiful to want to spend much of it indoors. Indoor chores are calling me, but I’ve been making time to get outside anyway. We’ve got to enjoy this weather while we can – it will be gone way too soon.
I love your search engine titles – I did go back and look at that originating post. This post has a unique smiley in it too – did you notice how your mushroom is almost bent into the shape of a smile?

    • Robin says:

      Thank you, Karma. 🙂

I didn’t notice that about the mushroom, but you’re right! Cool beans. And I agree with you about getting outdoors. This weather will not last forever. Best to enjoy it while we can.

The weather has been brilliant and I have taken some time to enjoy a walk or two. my twins are home on Autumn break from college so we’ve spent some quality time together too… Where does the time go? Would love to sit on my porch and see a view like yours. TY! 🙂
