207: Abstractions and reflections

(Dark cloud reflections.)

I’ve been playing, exploring, and have fun in Photoshop and Picnik again.  There is no real point to it other than the play, the exploration, and the fun.  Give it a try sometime.  You might enjoy it.  🙂

Painted clouds

We live in all we seek.  The hidden shows up in too-plain sight.  It lives captive on the face of the obvious — the people, events, and things of the day — to which we as sophisticated children have long since become oblivious.  What a hideout:  Holiness lies spread and borne over the surface of time and stuff like colors.

~Annie Dillard

Willow roots and cloud reflections

The key to the hidden lands beyond those veils lies in the letting go of all hope, fear and expectation.  The portal opens when one realizes that one no longer needs to seek it and must simply open to that which is already fully present.  In that vastness in which nothing is hidden and nothing needs to be revealed, all is transparent, clear, and the doors in response, open everywhere.

~ Ian Baker, The Heart of the World

Today’s Walk

It is a chilly, gray, rainy day here in the Bogs.  But after hearing about the snow that has been falling west and north of us, I don’t feel like I should complain about the rain.

Instead, I will tell you that after I was outside for a little while I began to appreciate the scent, the sound, and the feel of the rain.  I delighted in the way the individual drops would cling to the budding branches of the trees.  I told myself to be thankful for the rain that is watering the garden, the grass, the trees, the shrubs, the flowers, and other plants.  There are places in the world where rain is very much needed, and we are lucky this is not one of those places.

The birds appear to be enjoying the wet weather. The Great Blue Heron seems to prefer rainy days for fishing at out pond.  The robins are feasting on worms.  The other birds are bathing in puddles or sitting on branches, spreading their wings, and letting the rain wash over them.  The ducks, of course, are in their element.

Let the rain kiss you.  Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.  Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

~ Langston Hughes

The rain is soothing.  The rain makes a music all its own.  And the rain can be cleansing and healing.

A rainy day really isn’t such a bad thing after all.

  1. I’ve always thought that about rain. Except when you have to go a hundred places and you don’t have a car, it’s very cool. I love watching it fall from the warmth and coziness of my home, or falling asleep to the lulling sounds of the raindrops kissing the ground.
Today’s pictures are all beautiful, but the last one is my favorite. I love its depth and simplicity.

These pictures look like fun. I will have to find some time to play with my photos in photoshop, soon. (or more likely, when school gets out). thanks for sharing them.

I found, after being in Arizona for two months, that I really really missed the rain. It only rained once, and even then it was just s few drips here and there. No cleansing rains, no put-you-to-sleep rainy lullabies. Looks like you are having tons of fun “playing’ with these photos. Wonderful colors and abstracts.

      Thanks, Bo. 🙂

I hadn’t thought about the lack of rain in Arizona. After all the rain we’ve had lately, I might enjoy that for a little while.

  4. I love Photoshop effects and you’re right…sometimes it’s just fun to play around with them! We are getting rain here in Colorado tonight too, but I’m with you. It’s welcome. I enjoy falling asleep to the sound of it on my roof. Enjoy!

  5. You’ve created some beautiful and colourful effects here, Robin. They look like very lovely abstracts.

The rain can be so soothing most of the time. I spent Saturday out in the rain but unfortunately it was a day when I wished for fine weather!

I’ve been away from home for nearly a week now and have some stories to tell of my old home towns when I return. None of my photos come up to your standard, but I’m pleased with what I have taken, with the camera I have. A new camera is definitely on my wish-list! 🙂

  6. Thanks so much for sharing these “played-with” images! I love the effects, and the quotes you have paired with these photos echo the visual with verbal brilliance–such a beautiful marriage of image and language. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love Annie Dilliard, by the way.

I like the rain,Robin, so long as I haven’t just washed my hair and been caught out in it. BUT otherwise, face up and natural wash!!
Liking your play about effects, and simplicity is just that,. simple and pleasing, new growth and new life.
‘Tis sunny here, and Bess is enjoying soaking up the suns rays, she’s woofing for play and her poor back legs are so stiff with her osteoarthritis that she stumbles sometimes, but she staggers on, and I smile for it as I gather the memories in my heart. Isn’t life wonderful?, as it gives you a chance to stop and find what’s important now and again. xPenx

I’m so glad to hear Bess has been enjoying the sun, Pen. I do hope she continues to stay relatively pain-free and woofing playfully. 🙂

  8. I enjoy the rain too, but Im a desert rat and its a rarity here. I love playing in photoshop too! The roots look great!
