43: Reflections

(Morning reflections on the pond.)

Reflection is a recognition rather than knowledge.

~ Jean-Paul Sartre

It was warm when I went out for my walk this morning.  In the upper 40’s.  It wasn’t that long ago that I mentioned 40’s would eventually come to be a warm temperature.  I just didn’t think it would be this soon.

(A drop of rain.)

It was also very humid.  We had rain overnight and it gave everything a good soaking.  The air was still and quiet, almost thick with silence, broken up occasionally by the cawing of a crow, the screeching of a blue jay, or the chattering of the kingfisher who lives by the pond.

Except for the occasional ripple from a fish, the pond was like glass.  Calm.  Smooth.  Reflective.

I like the way reflections turn the world upside down.

(The sky on the pond.)

Only when the clamor of the outside world is silenced will you be able to hear the deeper vibration.  Listen carefully.

~ Sarah Ban Breathnach

(Reaching for the sky.)

During my daily walks there are moments — sometimes brief flashes, sometimes huge chunks of time — when I feel the connection that the spiritual gurus talk about.  One with everything, as the old joke goes.  They are heart- and soul-expanding moments.

Today I realized those moments are accompanied by a big smile.  I must look pretty goofy out there at times.  It’s a good thing there is nobody around to see me.
