I suppose there’s something to be said for this…

I just haven’t figured out what yet.

Of storms and flooding

(Front lawn puddle. January 2008.)

February is a crazy month in the Bogs in terms of weather. Monday we had a warm-up that melted all the snow and ice. The ground was super-saturated from the liquefying of the cold, white stuff.

Monday night when M and I came home from a concert (we saw Richard Thompson on his 1,000 Years of Popular Music tour — most excellent!) a light rain was coming down at a steady rate. Around 3:00 or 4:00am I woke up to heavily pounding rains. I’m not sure what time the heavy rain started. I put a pillow over my head to block out the sounds of the wind, rain, and thunder, and the strobe-like flashing of lightning, so I could go back to sleep.

I know it poured pretty heavily for at least a few hours, as it was still coming down at a good clip when I woke up again at 7:30am.

The deluge of water has to go somewhere when the ground is this saturated. One of the places it decided to go was in our basement. Flooding isn’t normal for us. Our house is up on a hill. This has happened once before, after a period of heavy rains associated with hurricane remnants came through.

Last night more storms and heavy rains moved through. This morning there’s more flooding.

*sigh*

But not to worry. All this wet stuff will be freezing over soon, and we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled winter.
