Hiking weather

(Gone to seed. November 2, 2006.)

I like the way that tree in the background to the right is peeking up over the rest of the trees, yellow leaves shining like a miniature sun.

We had two red-tailed hawks flying around the place this morning. There were also about 50 geese swimming around the pond. By the time I put on my shoes to go out and chase away the geese, they had mysteriously and quickly disappeared. They must have known I was coming.

It’s an invigorating day here in the Bogs. The air is fresh, clean, crisp, and cold. This is my favorite time of year, when the weather turns cooler and blows away all the heat, humidity, and staleness of the late summer months. Perfect hiking weather.

Walking revitalizes me. After one day on the trail I become different from the way I am at home. I am in touch with the seasons, the weather, the varied hours of each day. I see more keenly. I am aware of the details. —MARLYN DOAN, Hiking Light, 1982
