Cloudy with sunny spells

(Current weather in the Bogs. Sept. 29, 2006)

We’ve had a mix of weather today. It started out sunny, changed over to dark clouds and rain, and it’s now sunny again with a good mix of clouds. The temperature is cool and it’s quite breezy out there. Perfect, invigorating weather for a hike if I had the time. The air smells amazingly fresh and clean.

It’s also perfectly good weather for hanging out the laundry now that the rain has passed. I love the smell of sheets and clothing that have hung out in the wind and sun to dry. I often wonder how many Americans use a clothesline for drying their laundry these days. Probably more than I think. I’ve noticed that in our area it’s mostly the older homes (with the older people, perhaps?) that have clotheslines. Using a dryer is much easier, I suppose. But the laundry never smells as good when it comes from the dryer, no matter how hard they work on the laundry detergent and fabric softener scents. The only thing that captures that outdoor freshness is fresh outdoor air. The down side of that, of course, is when the outdoor air isn’t so fresh (when the neighbors are burning trash or something).

We’ll be leaving for Columbus is a few hours. I’m looking forward to visiting with our granddaughter once again. Children change so quickly. I’m sure she must be up to some new tricks since we last saw her.

That’s about it from the Bogs for now. 🙂

Adrift on the Lake
Autumn sky illuminates itself all empty
distances away toward far human realms,

cranes off horizons of sand tracing its
clarity into mountains beyond clouds.

Crystalline waters quiet settling night.
Moonlight leaving idleness everywhere

ablaze, I trust myself to this lone paddle,
this calm on and on, no return in sight.
